Increasing capacity of existing DWDM & CWDM networks
Need DWDM and CWDM were deployed in many networks in the last few years - but as with any networking technology, it's only a matter of time before some segments of the network reach their capacity limits. In WDM networks (CWDM and DWDM), the most intuitive growth path is to add a few more wavelengths to the network. However, this may be easier said than done.

challenges In most cases, adding wavelengths to an existing network requires the addition or replacement of OADM modules and optical MUX/DMUX cards. CWDM networks are limited to 16 wavelengths, yet faster capacity growth may quickly dictate an upgrade to DWDM for additional wavelengths. This upgrade requires the addition of DWDM OADMs and MUX/DMUX cards -- increasing the optical loss in the network. Compensating for the added loss may require adding repeaters or amplifiers or replacing optical interfaces with more powerful ones. The challenge, therefore, is to find a simple and cost-effective way to increase capacity in existing WDM networks.
