Most transport companies have spent years developing integrated transport and switching offerings only to come up short on flexibility and breadth of solution. This is largely because the market requirements for these technology domains is very broad and varies from customer to customer even within the same application. For instance, in the wireless backhaul world, the capabilities of the solution are very different depending upon where the carrier is in their evolution (3G, 4G, in between), what other businesses that carrier is in (do they use the same network for business services or wavelength services for instance), and what type of carrier are they? (Are they backhauling for themselves or for others?).
These factors will determine what types of services are needed, the physical characteristics of the equipment, the physical port mix on the devices chosen, and the density and switching capacity of the equipment chosen. Even for the same carrier, requirements will change as they evolve. Because the solution space was so broad, equipment vendors chose a segment where they would start and focused on providing capabilities for that segment. Most went for Carrier Ethernet since that was a space adjacent to where they existed already. What this meant was that they built a system that frequently came up short on capability and flexibility. Either they came up short on transport capability or switching and routing capability. And unfortunately, the market keeps evolving so, they never catch up.
Ekinops and Extreme Networks determined that the best way to approach the converged Transport and Switching space was to start with two vendors that were already "Caught Up" and merge the two solutions to deliver the cost points and operational simplicity that are the goal of all integrated transport and switching solutions.

The Ekinops/Extreme Networks Solution provides a single solution offering for all applications in the access, metro, and core. Layer 2/3 capabilities include MPLS, VPLS, Carrier Ethernet (Q-in-Q, Mac-in-Mac, etc.), Ethernet Switching, BGP, OSPF, etc. As one can see, this is quite a broad offering which allows our customers to use our solution not only for Carrier Ethernet builds (Wireless Backhaul,…etc.) but also for business Ethernet services, Broadband backhauling, data centers, and even internal data communications applications.
The Ekinops/Extreme Networks solution also offers a best in breed Layer 1 capability. So, if you have multiple applications, some of which require only layer 1 transport or a mix of Carrier Ethernet and Layer 1 transport for instance, the Ekinops/Extreme Networks solution offers a much broader tool kit for use in these applications. An example would be providing a mix of wireless backhaul and lit fiber services. The Ekinops/Extreme Networks solution allows for a broad set of lit services including 10/100 Ethernet, 1G FC, 2G FC, STM-1/OC-3, STM-4/OC-12, STM-16/OC-48, 40GbE, 100GbE by the end of the year, OC-192/STM-64, 10G FC, 8G FC, Infiniband,... etc.
